Roasted Lemonade – The Home Cook

When we first heard about roasted lemonade, we were immediately interested in trying it. We immediately fell in love with the rich flavor. Don’t be fooled, it doesn’t taste like burnt lemon at all. Grilling citrus brings out the natural flavors, and adding a bit of sugar before placing it over the flame means you’ll also get a hint of caramelization in the end result. It’s less sour and more lemony than the classic variety. In other words, this is a must try!

Ingredient description

  • lemon: Start by cutting the lemon in half. Then dip the cut sides in a little sugar.
  • water: It’s up to you how much water and ice to add! If you prefer a stronger citrus flavor, use less water.
  • sugar: Steeping lemons in sugar creates the deep, rich caramelization we’re looking for. Sugar is what sticks best to lemons. Other sweeteners, such as honey, will simply drip out of the lemon. You don’t have to sweeten the lemons, but I highly recommend it.

broiler alternatives

If you don’t have a gas or charcoal grill, you can also use your oven’s grill rack. Each oven works slightly differently, depending on whether the broiler is in the main oven or in a drawer below. Either way, the broiler setting is top-down heating. You can think of it as an inverted grill. If you are using a broiler, follow the same steps as shown in the recipe but place the cut side up instead of down.

Other Ways to Use Roasted Lemons

After removing the grilled lemons from the heat, allow them to cool for 5-10 minutes. Now you can juice them up to make grilled lemonade! You still need to take a few steps to turn it into something drinkable, but you can use the smoked and charred juice for other uses too! Consider adding it to marinades or even baked goods for a unique citrus flavor.

Freezing Instructions

If you want to make this recipe later, you can definitely freeze this unique drink. Follow the instructions on the recipe card below, but make sure not to add any water just yet. You can place the roasted lemon concentrate in freezer bags. Place it in the refrigerator and it will keep for 3-4 months. When you’re ready to drink it, defrost it overnight and add water to your taste preference.
