The best homemade tartar sauce recipe

This simple homemade tartar sauce is better than anything you buy in the store. It has an extra creamy flavor and is perfect for serving next to your favorite seafood dish.
My homemade tartar sauce will taste delicious in no time. One of our readers said it was “the best ever” and “out of exactly like a restaurant.” I bet you’re almost already sitting in the kitchen!
This tartar sauce tastes better than anything sold in a jar in a storeI can’t wait for you to try. I love my favorite seafood recipes like our homemade fish sticks, Maryland-style crab cakes, sachet salmon and this perfect shrimp cocktail.
Key Ingredients
- mayonnaise Offer our cream base. You can try making your own mayonnaise with store-bought mayonnaise or the best tartar sauce. While I prefer the richness of whole-fat mayonnaise, you can substitute mayonnaise for light mayonnaise or regular yogurt for a lower calorie sauce.
- Pickle Add crisp and flavor to the seasoning. We use dill pickles, especially if you like these homemade pickles or refrigerated Clawson pickles. For a sweeter style, try bread and butter pickles.
- Fresh lemon juice It’s crucial for the best tartar sauce. It makes the sauce clear, making it the perfect consistency of dipping and adds fresh flavor.
- Pomelo Add texture and too much flavor to our tartar sauce. I think this is one of the ingredients that really make this seasoning better than what you find in the store.
- Fresh or dried dill It is a must for us. If you don’t have dill, parsley is a great choice.
- Worcestershire sauce It’s an unusual ingredient, but it blends the sauce together. We only add dashes. We add Worcestershire sauce to dressings and seasonings. We even use it to make this homemade ranch.
- Dijon Mustard Added extra flavor and irritation. I like it.
How to make tartar sauce
If you can chop and stir some ingredients, you can make a tartar sauce. I’ve been disappointed with the store-bought tartar sauce, so we took some tips from our favorite seafood restaurants and we designed our own recipes. I never looked back.

You will add everything to the bowl and stir until well combined. Just a few seconds of stirring turns the sauce into a creamy and delicious sauce. I then put it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes as this does get better.

The best homemade tartar sauce
I really like this tartar sauce recipe! I’ve been disappointed with store-bought tartar sauce, so I was so excited when we figured out a way to do it at home. When I keep it in the refrigerator, I like to use homemade mayonnaise as this recipe. For egg-free options, replace vegetarian mayonnaise.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips
- storage: Tata sauce lasts about a week in the refrigerator. We love to enjoy double batches throughout the week. In the past, you would lose the fresh flavor of lemons.
